SURFACE
PREP
New Wood: Sand smooth using fine sandpaper, vacuum sanding dust.
Wipe clean using a tack-cloth or microfiber cloth. Do not use steel wool.
If open-grained woods are to be filled, use a filler that does not contain
stearates or waxes, such as ZAR Wood Patch.
Old Clear Finishes in Good Condition: Remove grease,
dirt and wax. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain to remove any
gloss. Do not use steel wool. Vacuum all sanding dust. Wipe clean using
a tack-cloth or microfiber cloth. If the old finish contains wax or stearates,
regardless of condition, remove completely. Clean dust with cloth dampened
with paint thinner or mineral spirits.
Old Clear Finishes in Poor Condition, Lacquer or Shellac:
Remove completely. Do not use steel wool. Sand and vacuum all sanding
dust. Wipe clean using a tack-cloth or microfiber cloth.
If wood is to be stained, use ZAR Wood Stain or a water-based stain. Allow
Wood Stain to dry a minimum of 3 hours. For water-based wood stains or
oil-based wood stains other than ZAR, follow manufacturer’s drying
directions.
NOTE: To ensure satisfactory results, always prepare a sample or test
the product on an inconspicuous area to determine compatibility prior
to completing the entire job. Do not apply over finishes containing stearates
or aluminum oxide.
APPLICATION
Stir
all sheens except ZAR ULTRA MAX Gloss Polyurethane thoroughly before and
during application. Stirring is not required for ZAR ULTRA MAX Gloss Polyurethane
finish. Do not shake! Apply straight from the can. DO NOT THIN. Use a
clean synthetic fiber brush or use a foam pad. Do not apply with a roller.
Apply thin coats at a rate of 400-500 sq.ft. per gallon in the direction
of the grain. Too thick a coat may appear milky when dry. Do not over
brush or trap air bubbles in the finish. Avoid over- brushing which may
trap air bubbles in the finish and result in streaks. Make final pass
of applicator a skimming stroke across the entire surface.
FLOOR APPLICATION
If floor is to be stained prior to applying ZAR ULTRA MAX, let stain dry
according to manufacturer’s drying directions.
Areas with poor ventilation such as closed rooms, corners and hallways
may take longer to dry. Prepare surface as above. Use a light weight T-Bar
with a synthetic applicator or use a foam pad and spread the finish towards
the opposite wall following the wood grain. Hold the applicator using
a snowplow technique to maintain a wet edge. When approaching the end
of a run, turn the applicator towards you and spread out excess material
parallel to the wet edge. Feather out all turns. For maximum protection,
apply 3 coats of ZAR ULTRA MAX. Allow floors to dry 24 hours before subjecting
to light foot traffic; 3-5 days before moderate (normal) traffic or moving
furniture. To avoid marring floor, lift and place furniture. One week
is required before maximum resistance is achieved. Do not cover floors
with rugs before one week has elapsed. If floor should become marred or
scratched, simply sand lightly using fine sand paper, vacuum all sanding
dust, wipe clean with a tack cloth or microfiber cloth and apply another
coat to repair the finish.
DRYING
Dries to the touch in 30 minutes, can be recoated after 2 hours. Drying
time will be affected by temperature, humidity and film thickness. If
while sanding, sandpaper gums or surface feels tacky, extend drying time.
CLEAN-UP
Clean brushes and tools immediately after use with warm soapy water.
COVERAGE
Covers up to 400-500 sq.ft. per gallon. Apply 2 coats, for floors
apply 3 coats.
