SURFACE
PREP
New Wood: Sand smooth using a fine sandpaper, vacuum sanding
dust. Do not use steel wool. Fill open-grained wood with a wood filler
that does not contain stearates or waxes.
Old Clear Finishes in Good Condition: Remove grease,
dirt and wax. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain to remove any
gloss. Do not use steel wool. Vacuum sanding dust.
Old Finishes in Poor Condition, Lacquer, Shellac or Paint:
Remove completely. If the old finish contains wax or stearates, regardless
of condition, remove completely. Do not use steel wool.Sand and vacuum
sanding dust.
Primed Steel Doors and Fiberglass Doors: Do not sand.
Wipe surface clean using a cloth soaked with paint thinner. Allow to
dry thoroughly.
APPLICATION
Stir
ZAR Satin Water-Based Exterior Polyurethane thoroughly before and during
application. Stirring is not required for Gloss finish. Do not shake.
Apply straight from the can; thinning is not required. Apply only when
air and surface temperature is between 60°F - 90°F and the relative
humidity is less than 50%. Use a foam brush or synthetic fiber brush.
Do not use a roller. Flow ZAR on in the direction of the grain. Apply
thin coats at a rate of 500-600 square feet per gallon. Too thick a
coat may appear milky when dry. Do not over brush or trap air bubbles
in the finish.
If wood is to be stained, apply a quality oil-based stain such as ZAR
Wood Stain, or a water-based stain. If a stain other than ZAR Wood Stain
is used, test ZAR Water-Based Exterior Polyurethane for a satisfactory
finish in a small area prior to completing the entire job. Do not apply
over paint.
Recommend, for maximum durability and wear, three (3) coats on wood
and two (2) coats on steel and fiberglass. For substrates subjected
to heavier wear, such as outdoor furniture, it is recommended you use
four (4) coats.
Dries to touch in thirty (30) minutes. It can be recoated in two (2)
to three (3) hours. Subject to use after 24 hours.
Do not apply during damp or rainy periods. Drying time will be affected
by temperature, humidity and film thickness. If while sanding, sandpaper
gums or surface feels tacky, extend drying times. Follow all directions
on label.
