 Bulls
Eye Shellac is an alcohol-based solution of pure lac, a natural resin
secreted by tiny insects on certain trees, mainly in India. It is available
in Clear and Amber. Both dry to transparent films - the Clear has a faint,
golden cast that is much lighter than oil-base finishes, while the Amber
has a warm, orange cast that gives a rich, antique-look to woodwork. Bulls
Eye Shellacs are manufactured using technology developed by Zinsser in
over a century's experience. They are uniform in quality, unmatched in
shelf life, and packaged for convenience of use. All-natural Bulls Eye Shellac has many of the great performance characteristics
of today’s synthetic clear finishes: In an age of fast-drying products,
few finishes dry as fast as shellac. Shellac is user-friendly and virtually
goof-proof. It can be applied with a brush, pad, sprayer, or wiping cloth.
No elaborate instructions are needed, good results are almost guaranteed,
and mistakes are easily corrected. In spite of all the wonders of 21st
century clear finish chemistry, there is still no other finish that enhances
the depth and natural beauty of wood grain like shellac. Wood that has
been finished with shellac looks soft and natural, not plastic-coated.
The finish will not yellow or darken with age like polyurethanes, and
it’s simple to maintain. In a time when more and more consumers
prefer finishes that clean up with soap and water, shellac brushes can
be cleaned in all-purpose household detergents or household ammonia and
        warm water.

        D
ue to its exceptional sealing and adhesion properties, shellac has many
other applications. A very thin mixture of shellac and alcohol can be
used to condition soft woods such as pine and fire before staining them
for a uniform and blotch-free appearance; shellac can be tinted with
universal colorants to create an ultra-dark, fast-drying primer for
interior walls and trim. Tinted shellac can also be mixed with tinted
B-I-N Primer-Sealer to produce an infinite variety of intermediate colors
and shades. (For more information, see Decorating with Tinted Shellac).
Shellac will stick to almost any glossy, hard-to-paint surface and is
the only coating in the world that will effectively block wood knots
and sap streaks, preventing then from bleeding into the finish paint
           Some
of the other exceptional performance properties of shellac include:

          Cold
temperature application – Unlike other finishes shellac can
be applied in cold temperatures (40o F. and below) without concern
            over proper drying and curing.
          Non-toxic/hypoallergenic
            – Dry shellac is certified by the Food and Drug Administration
as a protective glaze for candy and pharmaceuticals.
          Non-yellowing/non-darkening
            – Shellac is UV resistant and will not yellow or darken with
            age – unlike oil-base finishes.
          Dried
film is impervious to odors – Two or more coats of shellac will
seal in any kind of odor in any type of porous surface. | |
